How Stripe fees work in 2026
Stripe charges a percentage plus a small fixed fee on every successful card charge. For US online card transactions the standard rate is 2.9% plus 30¢. International cards add 1.5%, Amex on Stripe Billing adds 0.35%, and there is no monthly fee, no setup fee, and no card-storage fee.
The percentage component shrinks with bigger transactions while the fixed 30¢ does not, so the effective rate on a $10 charge is roughly 5.9%, while on a $1,000 charge it is closer to 2.93%. For very small transactions, ACH direct debit (0.8% with a $5 cap) or Stripe's micropayments pricing can be cheaper.
In-person and Tap to Pay rates
Stripe Terminal and Tap to Pay on iPhone charge a lower 2.5% + 10¢ on in-person card transactions. If you sell both online and at pop-ups or markets, switching to Tap to Pay on the in-person side cuts your effective processing rate noticeably on those sales.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ on standard US online card transactions. International cards add 1.5%, and Amex cards add 0.35% on Stripe Billing.
Does Stripe have a monthly fee?
No. Stripe has no monthly subscription, no setup fee, and no minimum. You only pay the per-transaction fee on charges you actually process.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
Usually yes for US sellers. Stripe is 2.9% + 30¢, PayPal goods & services is 2.99% + 49¢. The difference adds up on small transactions because of the higher PayPal fixed fee.
Can I avoid the Stripe international fee?
Not on the buyer side. If you want to accept international cards without paying the 1.5% surcharge, use Stripe Checkout in your customer's home currency and let Stripe handle the conversion.
