eBay charges a fee on shipping too
Like Etsy, eBay takes its cut on the shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price. The final value fee (FVF) of 6.35-15% depending on category - 13.25% in most - applies to the total sale, which includes shipping. There's also a small per-order fee of $0.30-0.40 on top.
If you charge exactly what shipping costs you, you lose the FVF on shipping out of your own pocket. A common workaround is to add a small handling margin into the shipping price the buyer pays, or fold the shipping into the item price and offer "free shipping."

Free shipping is increasingly the default expectation on eBay, especially in categories like apparel and accessories. It can improve conversion in price-comparison searches.
